How Does the New Grid Tariff System Work?

The new electricity grid billing model is based on a 5 time-block system and two annual seasons. The primary goal of this system is to encourage consumers to use the power grid more efficiently and shift major electrical loads (such as heat pumps, electric vehicles, or water heaters) away from peak hours to off-peak periods.

Key Elements of the New Tariff System

  • Five Time Blocks: Time Block 1 is the most expensive, while Time Block 5 is the cheapest. Three distinct time blocks rotate throughout a single day.
  • High and Low Season: High season runs for four months (November 1 to February 28/29), and low season covers the remaining eight months (March 1 to October 31). Time Block 1 only applies during working days in the high season.
  • Agreed Capacity vs. Excess Power: An agreed capacity (in kW) is set for each time block. If your peak demand exceeds the agreed capacity, penalty charges for excessive power apply.
  • Capacity and Energy Grid Fees: Total grid costs consist of a capacity fee (fixed portion based on kW) and an energy transfer fee (variable portion based on kWh consumed).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Information regarding your assigned agreed capacity for each time block can be found on the back of your monthly electricity bill or through your local distribution system operator's online portal.

You can easily reduce your grid costs by shifting heavy energy usage (such as EV charging, laundry, or water heating) to time blocks with lower rates (e.g., overnight or during weekends) and avoiding running multiple high-power appliances simultaneously.
